The Importance of Learning Through Play in Early Childhood

June 15, 2026 · 4 min read · By Ms. Sharon, Center Director

In early childhood development, play is not just a leisure activity—it is the very engine of learning. When a toddler stacks blocks, rolls a ball, or engages in make-believe play, they are conducting important scientific experiments, testing hypotheses, and learning how the physical and social worlds work.

Research shows that active, self-directed play stimulates the brain’s pathways, building the essential neurological framework for language, logic, and self-regulation. Through play, children learn how to solve problems, negotiate rules, share resources, and express their feelings constructively.

At Liddle Tykes, our curriculum is intentionally designed to promote ‘learning through play.’ Whether it is sensory tables, dramatic play corners, or outdoor play areas, we curate environments that inspire curiosity and foster peer cooperation. By providing rich materials and supportive supervision, we ensure that every game is an opportunity for cognitive and social growth.

As a parent, you can encourage this at home by allowing unstructured play time every day. Limit screen time, offer simple materials (like cardboard boxes, cups, and safety scissors) that spark imagination, and most importantly, get on the floor and join the fun!
