Nurturing Toddler Independence: Simple Tips for Parents

June 10, 2026 · 5 min read · By Ms. Kelly, Lead Toddler Teacher

There comes a phase in every toddler’s life when their favorite phrase becomes, ‘I do it!’ While it can sometimes be faster and cleaner to tie their shoes or feed them ourselves, supporting this desire for autonomy is crucial for their self-esteem and skill development.

Developing independence doesn’t happen overnight. It starts with small, daily activities where your child can practice choice and agency. When a child learns to do tasks independently, they build confidence in their own abilities and learn to persist through challenges.

Here are a few simple ways you can foster independence at home:

  1. Provide Limited Choices: Instead of asking ‘What do you want to wear?’, ask ‘Do you want the red shirt or the blue shirt?’ This gives them a sense of control without overwhelming them.

  2. Set Up the Environment: Keep toys, cups, and snacks on low shelves where your child can reach them without assistance. Use child-sized steps and stools in the bathroom.

  3. Allow for Extra Time: Start preparing for transitions 10-15 minutes earlier so your toddler has the time to put on their own shoes or coat without you needing to rush them.

Supporting autonomy requires patience, but the long-term payoff is a self-reliant, confident child who is eager to take on new challenges both at home and at school.
